When you live in the picturesque town of West Islip, New York, you may not feel the need to venture out too far. But if you are looking for some day trips with friends or family, we’ve got you covered. There are endless destinations within a two-hour radius, but we have some favorites.

1. Fire Island, NY

A quick drive on the Robert Moses Causeway over the Great South Bay will bring you to Fire Island, one of the barrier islands along the south side Long Island. From there you can explore the Robert Moses State Park and see the Fire Island Lighthouse. Also, you can take a walk and look for seashells along the protected beaches, which are part of the Fire Island National Seashore.

If you want to visit one of the 17 car-free towns on Fire Island, head over to Bay Shore and catch the Fire Island Ferry, which runs routes to different towns. Each town varies in size and amenities, but golf carts, bicycles, and boats are the main modes of transportation throughout the villages. There are less than 500 year-round residents on the island, but the population increases during the summer due to seasonal residents, vacationers, and daily visitors.

2. The Bronx, NY

Short visits to Manhattan are commonplace for residents of Long Island, but we recommend heading north into the Bronx. Throughout history, the Bronx has been home to many different immigrant cultures, creating the unique atmosphere found today. It is well known for being the home of many popular Latin, hip-hop, and rap artists.

Visit the New York Botanical Garden, where you can walk through the Thain Family Forest, the largest tract of the old forest that used to cover the land of modern-day New York City. For baseball fans, you can catch a game at Yankee Stadium or at least take a tour of the facilities. And no trip to the Bronx would be complete without a stop at the Bronx Zoo, a world-renowned facility.

3. Bridgeport, CT

You can drive around Long Island Sound to get to Bridgeport, but we think it is more fun to ride the car ferry from Port Jefferson, on the north side of Long Island. Kids will enjoy watching the other boats on the water from the rooftop deck and there is a lounge where adults can relax.

Bridgeport is known as “the park city” because there are hundreds of acres of public parks for everyone to enjoy. You can’t miss the Barnum Museum, which celebrates P.T. Barnum, who was a resident of Bridgeport, and his circus. The Discovery Museum and Planetarium is a fun and educational destination for children and adults alike.

This is just a shortlist of some of our favorite destinations for a day out of town. However, none of these trips would be possible without a comfortable and reliable vehicle. Check out the latest models at Atlantic Toyota.
