Located on the southern coast of Long Island, West Islip and its surrounds are a haven for lovers of all things from the sea. But with such a wide choice, you’ll need help, so we’re going to guide you through some of our favorite seafood restaurants in the area.

1. Captain Bill’s

Captain Bill’s has an enviable location. The address is “The Bayview House”, and what a view it has! Large restaurant windows provide excellent views, and in warm weather, it’s possible to sit outside to enjoy the sea atmosphere.

In the beautiful, elegant surroundings, you can enjoy fresh local oysters, clams, and fish. There’s even a tank to choose your live Maine lobster from. Be sure to pay attention to the chef’s specials menu. It changes every day and always has many exciting in-season options. Starting at 11:30 am, the Sunday brunch is also well worth visiting for if you’re having a lazy day with friends and family.

2. Salt & Barrel

You’re going to find friendly and attentive staff along with the oysters and other seafood delights at this favorite destination. By mixing local, fresh seafood with international flavors, this restaurant is one we love to drop into time and again.

From the sandwich menu featuring the excellent Warm Lobster Roll with butter-poached lobster, and the Fishwich with fried cod, cheese, tartare sauce, and coleslaw, to the full dinner menu, you’ll find something to delight here. Often starting with Barbecued Oysters or Baked Clams with chorizo, we’ll then almost always go for the house Fish and Chips. Perfectly cooked beer-battered cod with slaw and fries that is guaranteed to please.

3. FatFish On The Water

A Mediterranean-inspired, ocean-viewing restaurant with live music and outside seating for the summer. For us, even with its stunning location and great staff, it’s the tapas-style dining that has us returning. What could be nicer than sharing plates with friends from the excellent choice of small dishes that include many seafood specialties? Saffron Mussels in white wine are a delight, as is the Lemon and Garlic Shrimp.

As well as tapas, there is a full lunch, dinner, and children’s menu. Long Island specialties of local oysters and clams stand out, and there are fresh daily fish specials. The Shrimp and Scallop Fettuccine is a winner for us in its gorgeous creamy sauce with mushrooms and roasted peppers.

4. Chowder Bar

Located in a building that’s been around since 1946, this friendly restaurant is known for excellent value and good, honest seafood that comes in plentiful supply. Straight up, this place is where to go for chowder. The classic Long Island Clam Chowder has to be one of the best we’ve ever had, and it’s worth visiting for this alone.

You’ll also find fresh oysters and clams served with a delicious house special sauce, an extensive range of sandwiches, salads, tacos, and house specials like Honey Pecan Roasted Tilapia that are all delicious. But for us, it’s “more chowder, please!”

5.  Nicky’s On the Bay

There’s another fantastic view from this restaurant that’s right on the Bay Shore Marina point. There’s no bad seat in the house from either the sizeable water-side terrace and or from inside with the expansive windows, especially if you’re there for the sunset view. The restaurant can even cope with visits by boat as it has its own 100′ floating dock.

The menu features appetizer favorites such as Fried Calamari, Steamed Mussels, or Oysters Rockefeller. Our main course is the Stuffed Shrimp, where giant shrimp are stuffed full of delicious snow crab meat. Be sure to check out the daily specials, as the restaurant takes extra pride in coming up with innovative ways to present the “catch of the day”.
