No matter how busy and artificial modern life gets, people will always feel the need to reconnect with nature. Although West Islip, New York is close to one of the most densely populated areas in the world, there are plenty of great opportunities to escape the concrete jungle and get reacquainted with your natural roots.

  1. Gardiner County Park

If you live in or around West Islip and you’re looking for a place nearby where you can take a peaceful long hike or take your dog out for a walk, you should look no further than Gardiner County Park. Residing south of the Montauk Highway and initially owned by the Gardiner family, this 231-acre public park is the ideal place to spend an afternoon. You’ll probably encounter people just like you, who are out on nature hikes or just enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

Although you’ll be in a natural environment, you can still enjoy a picnic and The Parks Department will supply you with the setting and tools you need to enjoy a day out with friends and family. Restrooms are also present throughout the park, giving you just enough of civilization to properly and safely enjoy the natural landscape.

  1. Argyle Local Park

If your goal is to spend some time in a natural environment and also get some exercise, you should gather your friends and go to Argyle Park. This 8.9-acre park facilitates physical activities for all ages, from playgrounds for kids to basketball and tennis courts, and even a softball field. There are even picnic facilities in place, so you can grab a bite and enjoy some rest between games. The Argyle Recreational Building is also equipped with all facilities for social events like parties, showers, or any kind of gathering.

  1. Blydenburgh County Park

Located just 25 minutes North of West Islip, this park is an ideal place to stay the weekend, and even longer. You can use their trailer park or set up camp to fully immerse yourself in The Great Outdoors. There are plenty of activities to enjoy, from simply watching the natural surroundings to row boating, fishing, or horseback riding.

  1. Bayard Cutting Arboretum and Heckscher State Park

Located next to a gorgeous manor previously owned by the Cutting family, Bayard Cutting Arboretum is an ideal place to relax and discover an extensive collection of rare conifer trees. As opposed to other places on our list, this one does not allow usual park activities such as picnics, pet walking, bathing, or games. However, right next to it you’ll find Heckscher State Park, an ideal place for all these activities. It’s the perfect combination between absolute serenity and the thrill of outdoor games or sports.

From deserted beaches to dense forests and wonderful parks, there’s a virtually endless list of great activities for fans of the outdoors in and around West Islip. So gather all your loved ones, pack up your gear, and get ready to escape the city life in search of perfect relaxation.
