If you want to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors, there are several places to go hiking near West Islip, New York. Here are four of our favorite places to visit to get exercise, fresh air, and sunshine.

  1. Walt Whitman Trail 

This dog-friendly trail, about 14 miles from West Islip, begins at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Start your hike with a visit to the author’s home and then meander the 8.2 miles through the rolling landscape of West Hills County Park. For sweeping views of the surrounding area, climb to the top of Jayne’s Hill, which at 401 feet, is the highest point on Long Island. The loop trail takes you through shaded forests that feature native flora and fauna. You’ll often share the trail with equestrians and bicyclists, and if you bring your dog, keep them on a leash.

  1. Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve

A short 6-mile drive from West Islip is the Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve. The 813-acre preserve features a globally rare oak brush forest as well as pitch pine and scrub oak barrens to wander through. There are over 23 miles of paved and unpaved trails to hike on that take you through the forests and barrens. Along the way, you’ll also pass by big tooth aspen trees, open grasslands, and pristine plains. The trails are rated from easy to moderate, and as long as your dog is leashed, you’re welcome to bring them hiking with you.

  1. Belmont Lake State Park

About 4 miles from the town center of West Islip is the popular Belmont Lake State Park. Considered one of the best recreation areas on Long Island, Belmont Lake State Park offers a variety of activities, including horseback riding, boating, cross-country skiing, and hiking. There are picnic facilities to enjoy lunch after your hike and restrooms so you can freshen up. The nearly 8 miles of hiking trails take you through pine barren forests and around the lake which offers pleasant views of the water. Leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome on the trails.

  1. Heckscher State Park

The 1,1657-acre Heckscher State Park, 11 miles from West Islip, sits on the shores of the Great South Bay. While many people come to the park to enjoy the beach and to play in the water, there are also miles of hiking trails to enjoy. The 31-mile Long Island Greenbelt Trail begins in the park and eventually leads you to Sunken Meadow State Park.

As you walk the trails, keep an eye out for the plentiful white-tailed deer that frequent the park, and bring binoculars to spot some of the 280 different species of birds that live in the area. Bring a picnic with you and enjoy eating your meal with beautiful views of popular Fire Island in the distance.
