Walking along edge of Jones Beach on Long Island.New York can get hot and extremely humid in the summer. Any of these swimming spots in the Islip area are sure to cool you off.

Brightwaters Beach

Brightwaters Beach is in the southwest portion of Islip on the shoreline of Long Island. It is a popular swimming spot because of its convenient location near the city. There are also plenty of other recreational activities to participate in at the Brightwaters Beach. If you find the beach to be too busy, there are an additional four lakes scattered around the area. Wohseepee Park is also just across from the beach and is ideal for fishing, playing tennis, or enjoying the children’s playground.

North Hempstead Beach Park

This park is located in Port Washington on the Long Island Sound. Parking can be difficult to find and costs $15 per car, but the amenities make the price worth it. There is a lifeguard on duty daily until 6 p.m. throughout the entire summer season. In addition to swimming, guests can also enjoy basketball, horseshoe pits, picnicking, and fishing. There is also a public boat launch available within the park.

Jones Beach State Park

The Jones Beach State Park is one of the best sandy beach swimming options in the Islip area. It stretches over 6.5-miles of sandy beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean. Once you have cooled off in the refreshing ocean waters, you will find plenty of additional entertainment along the boardwalk. There are basketball courts, bicycle trails, an on-site historic exhibit, and many concession stands. The Northwell Health Theater hosts frequent outdoor concerts throughout the summer.

Tobay Beach

This South Shore Beach in Massapequa may be smaller than the other local swimming spots, but it is well-kept and has many useful amenities including covered pavilions, a splash pad play area, and a specially designated surfboarding area. The beach is in the center of Jones Beach Island, one of the barrier islands of Long Island. In order to prevent the beach from becoming overcrowded, only Oyster Bay residents are allowed to visit on the weekends. The beach is open on weekdays to non-residents.

Orient Beach State Park

Located in Orient, this state park overlooks Gardeners Bay. It features beautiful scenery, a relaxing beachfront, and an abundance of entertainment. This is a great swimming spot for younger children as the waters tend to be calmer. Bring along a picnic basket and utilize one of the available picnic areas. There is also on-site food available for purchase. Additional beach activities at the Orient Beach State Park include kayaking, hiking on one of the scenic nature trails, and playing ball on the full-sized baseball field. There are on-site showers available for rinsing off after a dip in the bay.

Islips’ proximity to the Great South Bay means that there are plenty of swimming spots worth checking out. Cool off this summer by visiting any of these exceptional swimming spots. Be sure to check prices and any special restrictions before visiting.
