The warmer weather that comes with spring on Long Island makes it the perfect time to get outside and get some fresh air. In West Islip and the surrounding areas, there are some wonderful parks where you can take a walk, watch the kids play, or just relax on a bench. Check out these West Islip-area parks this spring.

Argyle Park

Argyle Park in nearby Babylon offers some pretty views of the pond with a nice loop walk that winds its way around the main lake. This is a dog-friendly park and there is also a playground for the kids. There are always lots of ducks and geese around to see, and you might even see a swan out on the lake. The paved walking surface is nice and level, making it a good place for all levels of walking and running.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve

Connetquot River State Park Preserve is a large state park in Bohemia, New York. There are hiking and walking trails in the woods, and it is one of the top spots on Long Island for horseback riding. The wooded paths range in length so you can take just a short walk or go for a longer hike. The dirt road is also good for walking or running, and it will lead you to the fish hatchery area which is interesting to see. This park is also home to a small pond with some nice views, and it runs along the Connetquot River. Keep in mind that there is an $8 charge to enter this park, but if you have an Empire Pass it’s included.

Gardiner County Park

Stop by Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore for a peaceful afternoon walk. This is a popular place for dogs and their owners who tend to gather near the water. The dogs can go in the water to chase balls or just swim and cool off. There is a playground for the kids, a pond for fishing, and there are some trails if you want to take an extended walk or go for a run. The half-mile path leads down to Great South Bay with several other paths that branch off the main route.

Belmont Lake State Park

Belmont Lake State Park has lots of activities to keep everyone happy and busy on a spring day. When the weather gets warmer, there are a lot of water activities such as kayaking and paddleboats for rent, or you can just set up in your favorite fishing spot. There are several walking and biking trails that wind around the park, baseball fields, bocce courts, basketball courts, a playground, and many picnic tables and grills throughout the park. At the front, you can grab a map if you need help finding your way around.

Gather your friends and family on a warm spring day and head to one of these West Islip-area parks. You can spend some time enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise.
